Why fund SDG 12?

Resource extraction and processing cause more than 50% of global climate change impacts, and over 90% of global biodiversity loss. Inequality is starkly evident in the use of natural resources and distribution of the related benefits and environmental impacts across countries and regions. In order to address these crises, a fundamental change is required in how we use and manage natural resources in our socioeconomic system. Resource efficiency measures, complemented by well-designed sustainability actions and policies could lead to a 25% reduction in global resource use, which would contribute to a 90% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions. This would generate net economic benefits of a global GDP 8% above current projections including a more equal distribution of GDP per capita – ensuring prosperity within our planetary boundaries.

The One Planet network includes 140 national government focal points working to anchor SCP in their frameworks. The number of national policies and frameworks promoting SCP has significantly increased over the last 20 years (as demonstrated by the 12.1 reporting), but there is a clear implementation gap. Member States have requested strengthened cooperation, experience sharing and technical assistance to support their delivery of SDG 12.
