Funding SDG 12

Why fund SDG 12?

Perpetuating current modes of production and consumption, and current levels of inequality threaten the achievement of the entire 2030 Agenda.

Global Sustainable Development Report 2019

Never before has it been more urgent to change how we produce and consume. Current unsustainable patterns of consumption and production are driving many of the global crises we are now facing including biodiversity loss, climate change, pollution and the emergence of zoonotic diseases such as COVID-19.

What does the science say?

Resource extraction and processing cause more than 50% of global climate change impacts, and over 90% of global biodiversity loss. Inequality is starkly evident in the use of natural resources and distribution of the related benefits and environmental impacts across countries and regions. In order to address these crises, a fundamental change is required in how we use and manage natural resources in our socioeconomic system. Resource efficiency measures, complemented by well-designed sustainability actions and policies could lead to a 25% reduction in global resource use, which would contribute to a 90% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions. This would generate net economic benefits of a global GDP 8% above current projections including a more equal distribution of GDP per capita – ensuring prosperity within our planetary boundaries.

What is SCP?

Sustainable consumption and production (SCP) is a systems approach to delivering Agenda 2030. It considers the entire life cycle of activities: from the extraction of resources; processing of these resources into materials and products; the use of these products; and finally; their disposal as waste or emissions. Supporting countries in the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG 12) for integrated and scaled-up action at national level requires expertise, tools, solutions and financial resources.

Is there demand for support on SDG 12?

The One Planet network includes 140 national government focal points working to anchor SCP in their frameworks. The number of national policies and frameworks promoting SCP has significantly increased over the last 20 years (as demonstrated by the 12.1 reporting), but there is a clear implementation gap. Member States have requested strengthened cooperation, experience sharing and technical assistance to support their delivery of SDG 12.

What is the One Planet network offering?

The One Planet network is the recognized implementation mechanism for SDG 12, the network dedicated to implementing the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production, adopted at Rio+20. It offers:

Tools and solutions

Tools and solutions to support countries in how they use and manage natural resources at different stages of the value chain across high-impact sectors such as food and agriculture, buildings, construction and tourism. This work supports key socio-economic areas.

Multi-stakeholder partnership

A multi-stakeholder partnership and community of practice based on complementary expertise, knowledge sharing and national implementation capacity for SDG 12.

Science-based evidence

Science-based evidence to support policy making

Consolidation and analysis

A consolidation and analysis of data and trends from monitoring progress on SDG 12 implementation, based on official reporting.
