Value-Chain Approach
Task Group on Catalysing Science-Based Policy Action on SCP
Task Group on catalysing science-based-policy action on SCP
The science is clear on the need to decouple economic growth from natural resource use, and the positive impacts this would have on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting biodiversity and driving socio-economic development.
Yet this evidence does not always reach key decisions makers in a way that is relevant and actionable.
Our stakeholders, whether governments or businesses, need comprehensive and tailored information to help identify priorities, implement strategies, and monitor impacts around the sustainable management of natural resources.
To meet this need, the United Nations Environment Assembly requested that the One Planet network and the International Resource Panel form a task group to catalyse science-based-policy action on sustainable consumption and production.
Aim and Goals of the Task Group
The Task Group, comprised of the International Resource Panel and One Planet network, prepared a pathway for increased uptake by the One Planet network (governments, business, and other stakeholders) and beyond of the scientific data in the International Resource Panel's reports and other available reliable sources, such as UNEP reports and data on material footprint, material consumption and related data accessible through tools such as the SCP-Hotspot Analysis Tool and the World Environment Situation Room, among others.
This was addressed through "translating" the information in these reports and other data sources to extract key data and messages and developing actionable science-based recommendations responding to the needs of different stakeholder's groups including policy makes and businesses.
Report of the Task Group
In advance of the 5th United Nations Environment Assembly, the Task Group of the One Planet network and International Resource Panel (IRP) released its final report showcasing the ‘Value-Chain Approach,’ a methodology for science-based policy action on Sustainable Consumption and Production.
UNEA5 DIGITAL LAUNCH EVENT
On 19 February, at a digital event on the sidelines of the 5th United Nations Environment Assembly, members of the IRP-One Planet network Task Group presented the Value-Chain Approach and discussed how it can strengthen the science policy-interface on sustainable consumption and production, in response to UNEP/EA.4/Res.1. You can watch it below.
Approach of the Task Group
To achieve its aim, the Task Group applied the value-chain approach to three prioritised sectors: Construction, Food and Textiles.
The value-chain approach anchors natural resource use and environmental impacts within the socio-economic reality of production and consumption and uncovers actionable insights on how the management of resources is connected with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
