PROGRAMME - SESSION 11
Action to Shift the Built Environment from Linear to Circular
Organised by:
Description:
This session features promising solutions that focus on circular economy and equitable strategies for the built environment, followed by an interactive innovation studio for participants to brainstorm collaborations to bring to the Circular Built Environment working group under the Global ABC Materials Hub, to take forward or to seek to identify the right connectors for the proposal. At present, the built environment is estimated to be responsible for 40% of global resources in their entire life cycle – including 40% of waste and 30% of greenhouse gas emission. This is due to the use of carbon-intensive materials such as cement and steel during the construction phase, and to the high use of energy in the operational phase. And yet,75% of the infrastructure that will be in place in 2050 does not exist today, including housing, and we will see most of that infrastructure in low- and middle-income countries (World Green Building Council, 2019, Bringing Embodied Carbon Upfront report).
This session examines how to address these global challenges. And inclusive markets are a primary mechanism for addressing systemic inequality faced by women, people with special needs, LGBTQI, market actors and households in the Global South. By shifting the built environment from a linear model towards circular systems and practices, we have the opportunity to address not just economic and environmental outcomes but also social impacts such as inclusion, livelihoods, and beyond. And for housing specifically equitable, healthy, sustainable and affordable options are necessary to address wellbeing and inclusivity, access to essential services, livelihood opportunities and affordability as well as links to 15 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
