PROGRAMME - SESSION 1
Unlocking the barriers to sustainable food systems transformation: Inclusive and equity-sensitive actions at the nexus of climate, biodiversity and nutrition.
Organised by:
Description:
Food systems need to be urgently transformed to address the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, and to achieve the hunger and nutrition related targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The UN Food Systems Summit +4 Stocktaking Moment as well as the UNFCCC COP28, through the Emirates Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems, and Climate Action, called for more policy convergence in the areas of food systems, climate and biodiversity, to promote food systems transformation in support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). This requires coherent and cross-sectoral policies covering all stages from production to consumption and linking to all sustainability dimensions, as well as the active participation of all relevant actors including also social movements, civil society organizations, academia, grassroots organizations, and youth groups, among others, while considering mechanisms for preventing and mitigating conflicts of interest.
This session will highlight experiences, practices and solutions as well as business and value chain opportunities at national and local level – including indigenous communities – that promote climate- and biodiversity-friendly outcomes, healthy and sustainable diets, inclusiveness and equity. The event will focus on inclusive and equity-sensitive actions that stimulate multiple environmental, social, and economic benefits. It will emphasize the leadership of local actors and highlight the importance of social participation in the development and implementation of strategies, ensuring the effective participation of all relevant actors, including small-scale farmers and vulnerable groups, without conflicts of interest, and supporting the reduction of inequalities.
Circular bBioeconomy approaches are is high on the G20 Presidency’s agenda, and sustainable and circular bioeconomy solutions can play an important role in the transition to Sustainable Consumption and Production. To do so, all relevant actors must be effectively included in the related processes and trade-offs across the different sustainability dimensions need to be proactively addressed. Agroecology seeks to reconnect producers and consumers through a circular and solidarity economy, and to promote fair solutions based on local needs, resources and capacities, creating more equitable and sustainable markets. The session will contribute towards a common understanding of circular bioeconomy in the context of food systems transformation and discuss how it can build on the agroecology principles. Sustainable public food procurement (e.g. school meals, social protection programmes etc.) that is based on circular bioeconomy and agroecology equally offers major opportunities to unlock some of the key barriers to sustainable food systems transformation at the nexus of climate, biodiversity and nutrition.
