Advancing bioeconomy solutions in the context of sustainable consumption and production

Image

Description:

Bioeconomy, as an economic and productive paradigm that utilizes renewable biological resources to create products and services, has emerged as a critical strategy for accelerating the shift towards sustainable consumption and production patterns(SDG12). Bioeconomy holds the potential as an approach for achieving environmental protection alongside economic growth and social well-being. Bioeconomy could accelerate more innovation, resource-efficiency, social equality, and market competitiveness.

As part of Brazil’s G20 presidency, the G20 Initiative on Bioeconomy (GIB) was created to spearhead the global bioeconomy agenda. The Initiative has compiled significant insights on the potential of this productive and economic paradigm including an agreed-upon set of High-Level Principles on Bioeconomy. Whilst perceptions of the bioeconomy vary by country, convergence is necessary so that when implemented they impact the climate, nature and people positively. Equity must be part of the sustainable development allowing for access, opportunities, and inclusion of local communities, indigenous people and small-scale producers.

Co-hosted by UNEP One Planet Network, the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV), and the European Commission DG Research & Innovation, this plenary session will convene stakeholders and participants to explore bioeconomy as an enabler for patterns of sustainable consumption and production. It will build upon findings from a series of consultative workshops conducted in March in preparation for the G20 Bioeconomy Initiative which brought together civil society, private sector representatives, government and academia. Through this interactive dialogue, the session aims to identify key pathways and best practices for advancing bioeconomy as an enabler for SDG12.

The Bioeconomy Imperative for SDG 12

The way we produce and consume in a linear economy is at the root cause of our main environmental challenges, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. To tackle these challenges, the circular economy offers a solutions framework that is based on three principles driven by design: eliminate waste and pollution, circulate products and materials, and regenerate nature. As momentum grows globally around the bioeconomy, that is, the growing economic use of biological resources in sectors like food, fibers, health, energy, and others, it is paramount to design such products and systems in consideration of the circular economy principles to ensure nature thrives and prosperity is built from the outset. In this session, you will deep dive into the different ways this can happen in practice.
