Advancing Equity through circularity: the global circularity protocol for business as a catalyst for just transition

Image

Description:

The Global Circularity Protocol for Business (GCP) is a business-led initiative spearheaded by the WBCSD in collaboration with the One Planet Network Secretariat (OPN) which presents a comprehensive framework to accelerate the transition towards a circular economy. It is a voluntary framework that aims to address key accountability and policy gaps currently impeding the scaling of circularity globally. The Global Circularity Protocol for Business aims at providing companies with a standard corporate performance accountability system for circularity, resulting in harmonized circularity methodologies and accounting metrics for reporting and disclosing their circularity performance, target-setting, assurance, and communication. It aims to provide policymakers with practical policy levers to address the roadblocks that impede leading companies from scaling and speeding up their circular transition. The development of the GCP seeks to ensure active engagement of partners from academia, cross-sectoral businesses, NGOs, and policymakers to address accountability and policy gaps currently impeding the scaling of circularity.

Co-hosted by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the One Planet Network (OPN), the session tackles the potential of the Global Circularity Protocol for Business to level the playing field between the Global South and Global North in accelerating the circular transition of businesses. The circular economy could unlock $4.5 trillion of economic growth and create 6 million new jobs through activities like recycling, repair, rent and remanufacture. Switching to more circular business models, including fashion rentals, re-commerce, repair and refurbishment could enable the industry to cut around 143 million tonnes of GHG emissions in 2030. Circularity in producing and managing food resources could reduce emissions by 49% or 5.6 billion tons CO2 – almost halving emissions from this sector by 2050.
