UN actions to advance Sustainable Development of SIDS through Tourism: Fostering Sustainable and Circular Solutions

Uniting the UN System to Drive Economic Development and Conserve Environmental and Cultural Ecosystems in SIDS through Sustainable Tourism, an official side-event of the SIDS4 Conference.

Date: Thursday 30th of May, 10:00-11:30

Venue: Room 9, American University of Antigua, Jabberwock Rd, Osbourn, Antigua & Barbuda

The 10Year Framework on Sustainable Consumption and Production patterns (10YFP) is an intergovernmental agreement established by the UN General Assembly and which reports to the HLPF. The nexus dialogues, organized by the 10YFP Secretariat (serviced by UNEP) in collaboration with the UN Environment Management Group (EMG), UN Tourism, and other UN entities, aim to foster a cohesive UN strategy to integrate circular economy principles in high-impact sectors, such as tourism.

These dialogues are dedicated to enhancing UN cooperation to aid the transformation of the tourism sector in SIDS, acknowledging its vital role in their sustainable development. Tourism is a key economic pillar for many SIDS, contributing to their GDP, and is deeply intertwined with the social and cultural identity of these regions. SIDS face unique challenges due to climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, that are intensified by the tourism activities these islands frequently accommodate. The event will focus on the dual objective of promoting sustainable tourism that drives economic development while conserving and protecting the fragile environmental and cultural ecosystems of SIDS. Tourism can also be a catalyzer of sustainability in other sectors: food, buildings, transportation.

Objectives of the Nexus Dialogue: The dialogue aims to showcase and enhance UN coordination in implementing sustainable tourism in SIDS at national and regional levels. This will involve:

  • Sharing knowledge and experiences specific to sustainable tourism in the SIDS context.

  • Understanding how UN agencies can leverage their expertise and resources to transform tourism value chains in SIDS.

  • Identifying opportunities for enhanced collaboration within the UN framework, focusing on SIDS' specific needs.

  • Addressing gaps, including financial ones, to provide direct support to SIDS and facilitate the execution of sustainable tourism solutions.

The outcomes of the dialogue will inform the relevant resolutions of the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly and the next version of the Results Framework and Budget of the 10YFP. The dialogue will reinforce UN coordination within the framework of the One Planet Sustainable Tourism Programme, focusing on delivering sustainable tourism responses that ensure environmental and cultural preservation and drive the economic development of SIDS, including through the provision of best practices.

Target Audience: The dialogue will bring together high-level representatives from UN agencies, International Organizations, UN Resident Coordinators, member states (with a focus on SIDS), and representatives of the One Planet network.
